Nestled in the southeast of Morocco, this desert town boasts the typical terracotta-colored, blocky buildings found in this region. Merzouga is positioned on the fringes of Erg Chebbi, an awe-inspiring expanse of sand dunes that soar to heights of 160 meters. These monumental dunes, located to the south of the town, present a breathtaking spectacle, especially during the sunset when they transform from golden hues to shades of orange, pink, and purple.
The main draw for tourists flocking to Morocco is the chance to visit the Sahara Desert. Riding on a dromedary (one-humped camel) and spending a night under the stars in the desert can evoke the feeling of being in a fairytale movie. The experience is incredibly romantic, especially as you watch the Sahara sunset, a sight that lingers in your memory.
You’ve likely come across dreamy images on social media—girls running through sand dunes in vibrant dresses, groups of camels trekking atop a dune with the sun setting in the backdrop, and luxurious tented camps set up like scenes from a Vogue photo shoot. If you’re planning a visit to Morocco, one standout experience awaits you: a night in the Sahara, snugly nestled between sand dunes, gazing up at the stars. Spending a night under the stars in the Sahara Desert is a rare opportunity, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience unlikely to be replicated anywhere else in the world.
Your hotel /Riad in Merzouga
We’ll start your adventure by picking you up from your hotel in Merzouga, guiding you to the spot where you’ll meet your camel for a trek through the desert. Traverse the red dunes until all that surrounds you is sand and sky, with the occasional snort of the camels and the soft sound of their steps on the sand breaking the serene quietness. The camel ride takes you deep into the heart of the desert, providing a unique experience reminiscent of traditional Sahara travel.
As you’re led on a camel through the vast orange expanse of sand dunes, occasional stops, perhaps halfway, allow you to savor the mesmerizing view of the sunset. With nothing around but the warm sun in those final hours of the day, it’s a chance to connect with the Sahara’s rich travel history. Upon reaching the camp, a warm welcome awaits you with a cup of tea. Take the time to explore and revel in the tranquility of the desert. Prepare for a Moroccan dinner served under the stars by the campfire, followed by a captivating drum show performed by the camp staff. As night falls, you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the stars, shooting stars, and the Milky Way.
In the morning, for those who wish to greet the dawn, your desert camp hosts will wake you up early to witness the sun beginning its daily arc. Don’t forget to capture these iconic moments for your social media feed. After a delightful breakfast, ride your camels back to Merzouga around 8 AM, marking the end of our one-night camel ride in the desert camp.
