What to Expect

For Atlas Trekking you need to prepare as you would for walking in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (autumn through late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind you; carry out what you carry in.

Atlas Treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of basing yourself in Berber Guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On mule treks you usually have the choice of staying in Berber Guesthouse/with families or wild camping in 2-person tents. In addition to regular packing, here is a Check List for Atlas Trekking:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking pants
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers / rain-pants
Itinerary

Day 1

Pick up from Marrakech Airport and transfer straight to Imlil, a village in the High Atlas Mountains at 1740m. Here you will spend the night in a guesthouse.

Day 2

After breakfast you will start the trek. You will walk from Imlil (1740 meters) towards Tacheddirt (2300m) via Tizi ‘n Tamatert (2279m) pass. We spend the night in a local gite. In summer it is also possible to spend the night in tents. This day will involve approx. 4 hours of walking.

Day 3

Today we trek from Tacheddirt to Imsker (1300 meters) down the Imnane valley crossing the following Berber villages: Ounskra, Tamguiste, Ikkis, Amssakrou and Arg. We spend the night in a local gite or in tents. This day will involve approx. 5 hours of walking.

Day 4

After breakfast it is time to walk from Imsker (1300 meters) to Tizi Oussem (1900 meters) via Tizi ‘n Lbour (1500 meters) pass, Imlil valley, Tizi ‘n Tacht pass (2000 meters), Ait Aissa village (Azzaden valley). You will spend the night in Tizi Oussem (1900 meters) in a local gite. This day will involve approx. 6 hours of walking.

Day 5

Today we will walk from Tizi Oussem (1900 meters) to Imlil (1740 meters) via Ighouliden Waterfalls (2400 meters) and Tizi Mzik pass (2450 meters). From here we walk back to Imlil where the car is waiting for us. We will drive back to Marrakech where you will spend 3 nights in a riad in the medina. This day will involve approx. 4 hours of walking.

Day 6

Free day in Marrakech.

Day 7

Free day in Marrakech.

Day 8

Transfer back to the airport and departure.
